Our Vision

The Nepal Social Immersion Program aims to inspire people worldwide to become local and global change agents. We are developing global learning communities and conscious global citizenship amongst academics, professionals and youth by creating a platform for leadership learning journeys with dialogue and exchange across sectors, disciplines and countries.

We aim to create a true paradigm shift by creating an environment that fosters personal and professional change. Through integration with Nepali social workers, these programs offer participants an opportunity to diversify their perspectives. These programs offer an opportunity to establish new relationships and have access to new resources. Together we inspire each other to continue on the journey of social wellbeing we hope to see in the world.

Our Social Immersion Programs

The Nepal Social Immersion Program offers custom designed courses usually between 2 and 3 weeks in duration that use wilderness immersion and community immersion to create unique and inspiring learning experiences. A group of maximum 12 foreign professionals or students will be match with the same number of Nepalis for the duration of the programme.

With 30 years of experience we have found that wilderness settings offer the space and inspiration to clear habitual assumptions and ways of thinking and promote fresh perspectives. With this is mind and with the most breath-taking mountain landscape in the world in our backyard, we use wilderness as a place for our local and international participants to meet and develop strong relationships and partnerships. In addition to promoting cross cultural dialogue our course fosters personal agency and responsibility. Our key interests are issues of Social Justice and how Nepal – its people, its social sector, its government and society- respond to the prevalent and ever changing landscape of social and economic challenges. Questions of purpose, relevance, performance and delivery of services are explored.

Skills Development Trek

After the earthquake in 2015 Satish with the help of Karin Ahrling and Brian Polden developed what was originally called the rebuild trek. A number of trekkers, each with their own professional skill, from engineering, to teaching chemistry, from farming, to nursing, to music lessons came out to Nepal and trekked into one of the hardest hit villages in Sindulpakchok. He organised medical doctors, dentists and nurses from Kathmandu to come along and thus created real momentum in rebuilding - not just homes and fields, but hopes and health in the community.

Every trek that followed some other skills were represented in the people that showed up for it. After a ten to fourteen day hike we arrive in the village of Thulo Bhotang and the adjacent villages and Nireka Adventures pre-pares for three to four days of Skills transfer experiences - in the local school as well as with the local villagers - wherever the skill fits and the curiosity to learn it is present. So now these treks are no longer called rebuild treks but SKILLS DEVELOPMENT TREK - knowing so well, that in all the teaching and being with each other - you, the trekker learn as much if not even more as you allow yourself to be immersion in the local village life for a few days.

From that first one in 2015 many more followed and Satish is passionate about continuing the opportunity for people to offer their skills to the local population. Combining trekking with leaving real transferrable skills in the communities you trek is what makes this trek absolutely unique

About Wiebke Nedel

Wiebke, originally from Germany lives in South Africa, and works as a free-lance facilitator worldwide. She devotes her work and life to the field of personal development and leadership in a global context. Since 2014 Wiebke has spent many months every year in Nepal.

She has a MA in Education (Germany), is a trained Wilderness, Mountain and Vision Quest guide (South Africa/USA) with 20 years of facilitation experience with youth and adults in many countries worldwide. Wiebke’s passion is the development and facilitation of global learning programmes on Social Justice.

As International Programme Manager for the non-profit NGO Educo Africa www.educo.org.za and Director of the Educo International Alliance www.educointernational.com she invites groups of academics, professionals and youth from all over the world to South Africa focusing on deep immersion into issues of local and global social and environmental justice with the aim to build conscious global citizens, and self-aware and globally trained academics and practitioners.

Experiential methodology, using the wilderness as a tool for growth, self-recognition and building cross-cultural and cross-national relationships, deep diving into communities on a grass root level as well as multi stakeholder engagements are the significant learning tools applied in her programs.
